The Six Gifted Families
-
1. Sight
Special abilities belonging to the "sight" family usually allow one to discern and see things above and beyond that of the normal wayman. Noted abilities belonging to this category include:
Sensing dark spirits
Mapping (being able to identify the geographical location of dark spirits on a map)
Detecting lies in verbal speech
Future sight
Seeing into someone's "spirit"
Etc.
Those who fall into this family of giftedness and grow it into full maturation tend to be the wisest, most discerning, thoughtful, and appreciative of all the waymen.
The Dark Side
The dark side of this gifted family is that some of its members can fall into cynicism, depression, skepticism, and hopelessness (especially for those future sight members who are able to see future possible future outcomes).
Fun Fact
"Future sight" is one of the most controversial and rare abilities out of all the categories. Those who wield it don't actually predict the future. Rather, they are able to see different outcomes of certain decisions!
-
2. Defense
In a way that goes above and beyond the average wayman, warriors that fall into the "defense" family of gifts are especially skilled in protection. Noted abilities belonging to this category include:
Barriers
Attack reflection
Attack nullification
Supernatural resistance to poisons, viruses, chemicals and toxins
Smoke screens
Signal cloaking
Etc.
Waymen who fall into this family of giftedness tend to a highly loyal disposition to their family and friends. They will protect them at all costs, even above their very lives.
The Dark Side
Defense gift wielders innately use their powers to protect those they love. When these users give in to hateful vengeance their powers can mutate and express itself in a very sadistic way. Instead of protecting, their hearts began to relish in causing pain. (Ex: an enclosed barrier designed to protect suddenly developing spikes and closing in to harm those on the inside.
Fun Fact
There has been a long debate on the gift of invisibility. Some wayman scholars place it in the defense family while others place it in body manipulation.
-
3. Sustainment
"Sustainment" is a smaller family of abilities that can be rather miscellaneous,. Most of these gifts, however, tend to reinforce others or offer some sort of support. These gifts are like the bones and joints that form the hand that holds the sword. Noted abilities belonging to this category include:
Healing
All abilities related to imbuing spirit energy into normal objects and granting them supernatural properties
Boosters (multiplying the effectiveness of someone else's power)
Telepathic communication
Sealing abilities
Etc.
Waymen who fall into this family of giftedness tend to be the caring, selfless and compassionate types. Though their abilities may not thrust them onto the front lines of battle, these waymen often fill the necessary background roles that allows waymen operations to be successful.
The Dark Side
The dark side of this gifted family usually shows up when its members feel most neglected, isolated, and taken advantage of. Some members in this category have been known to have their gifts mutate and express itself in very dangerous ways. Instead of giving, deformed expressions of their powers take in very nasty ways.
Fun Fact
Certain waymen with this ability are able to imbue spiritual power into the things they build, fortifying facilities against dark spiritual power without the need of a barrier!
-
4. Offense
Special abilities belonging to the "offense" family are the most common of all the special giftings. These are the ones that relate directly to combat. Noted abilities belonging to this category include:
Elemental generation (fire, water, air, earth, etc.)
Weather related powers (rain, lightning, thunder waves, etc.)
Acidic liquids
Shooting spikes or other projectiles
Telekinesis
Etc.
Within the offensive abilities, even the above list breaks down into sub-abilities (one may be able to generate water but cannot do ice, for example).
Waymen who fall into this family of giftedness and grow it into full maturation are the tip of the spear in the fight against evil. They can be bold, courageous, direct, and powerful.
The Dark Side
The dark side of this gifted family is that its members are the most prone to "power creep" (a condition in which wielding great power over extended periods of time can cause waymen to lean into corruption, selfishness, or using their power to abuse rather tan to help).
Fun Fact
The ability to generate fire out of thin air is the rarest of all abilities in the offense category
-
5. Body Manipulation
Body Manipulation gifts are sometimes confused with "offense" gifts. Though similar (and in some ways, overlapping) the key distinction is that these type of gifts turn the user into the weapon versus expelling the attack from the body like in offense. Noted gifts in this category includes:
Extraordinary strength
Invisibility
Flight
Shape-shifting
Growth/shrinking
Enhanced speed and agility
Etc.
Waymen who fall into this family of giftedness tend to be those who lean into disciplined living and usually have a higher reluctance to fully lean into the destructiveness of their power.
The Dark Side
The dark side of these gifts show up in moments where these members lose control. In those moments, instead of using their powers like a surgeon, these members become most prone to wield it like a mighty hammer.
Fun Fact
Some waymen with this ability, can transform their skin into the material that they touch!
-
6. Space-Time
Gifts from the "Space-Time" family are by far the least understood and explored. This family of gifts is also the smallest (statistically) of all the families. Noted gifts in this category includes:
Time senses (seeing time "slow down")
Teleportation
Time-delay (creating a small pulse that forces the user into a space of slow motion for a few seconds)
Creating vacuums
Powers dealing with gravity and mass
Manipulation of space
Creation of portals
Etc.
Waymen in this family are often strange, eccentric, quirky, very introverted or highly intelligent.
The Dark Side
Not enough is known about these gifts to fully understand their dark side. But the waymen who possess these gifts, if they do not actively have a community surrounding them, have the highest tendency towards madness/mental insanity.
Fun Fact
Some experts suggest only 5% of waymen belong to the space-time family.
